BMW VIN Decoder FAQ

Everything you need to know about decoding BMW VIN numbers — from basic structure to factory codes and model year encoding.

Basics

What is a BMW VIN number?

A BMW VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character alphanumeric code assigned to every BMW vehicle at the point of manufacture. It is standardized under ISO 3779 and encodes the manufacturer, model, engine type, model year, production plant, and serial number. No two vehicles share the same VIN.

Where is the VIN located on a BMW?

Your BMW VIN can be found in multiple locations: (1) Dashboard – visible through the windshield on the driver's side lower corner, (2) Driver's door jamb sticker, (3) Engine bay – stamped on the firewall or strut tower, (4) Vehicle registration and title documents, (5) Insurance documents and owner's manual.

How many characters is a BMW VIN?

All BMW VINs are exactly 17 characters long, consisting of uppercase letters and numbers. The letters I, O, and Q are never used to avoid confusion with numbers 1 and 0.

Decoding

What does the first digit of a BMW VIN mean?

The first character identifies the region of manufacture. "W" indicates Germany (Europe). Combined with the next two characters (WMI), "WBA" means BMW AG passenger car, "WBS" means BMW M GmbH, "WBY" means BMW i electric vehicle, "WBX" means BMW SAV built in Spartanburg, USA.

How do I find the production year from a BMW VIN?

The 10th character (position 10) of the VIN encodes the model year. The mapping cycles through letters A-H, J-N, P-Y (skipping I, O, Q) and digits 1-9. Key examples: K=2019, L=2020, M=2021, N=2022, P=2023, R=2024, S=2025. Note that letters also represent the 1980s cycle (A=1980, B=1981...) which can cause ambiguity with the 2010s cycle.

What does position 11 (factory code) mean in a BMW VIN?

The 11th character indicates the assembly plant. For BMW: A/B = Munich (FIZ), C = Regensburg, E/F = Dingolfing, H = Spartanburg (USA), K = Rosslyn (South Africa), L = Leipzig, M = Munich M cars, P/T = Shenyang (China). This tells you exactly where your car was built.

What is the check digit in a VIN?

Position 9 is a mathematically calculated check digit (0-9 or X for 10). It is used to verify the VIN is not a forgery. The check digit is calculated by assigning values to each character, multiplying by positional weights, and taking the sum modulo 11. If a VIN's check digit does not match the calculated result, the VIN may be falsified.

How do I identify a BMW M car from the VIN?

Genuine BMW M cars (M3, M4, M5, etc.) built by BMW M GmbH have VINs starting with "WBS" instead of "WBA". M Performance variants (M340i, M440i) still use "WBA" as they are built on standard BMW platforms with M tuning. Always check the WMI (first 3 characters).

Using the Tool

Is this BMW VIN decoder accurate?

Our decoder uses standardized BMW VIN coding rules based on ISO standards and BMW's internal coding system. Basic decoding (year, WMI, factory, series class) is highly accurate. Specific trim/option decoding requires access to BMW's proprietary option code databases which are not publicly available.

Do I need to register to decode a BMW VIN?

No. Our BMW VIN decoder is completely free to use with no registration, no email required, and no usage limits. Simply enter your 17-digit VIN and get instant results.

Why does my VIN give an error?

Common reasons for VIN errors: (1) VIN is not 17 characters, (2) Contains invalid characters I, O, or Q, (3) Does not start with a BMW WMI code (WBA, WBS, WBX, WBY, WBW), (4) Contains spaces or special characters. Make sure to copy the full VIN exactly as printed on your vehicle.
